Building Engagement on Twitter

Twitter has grown immensely over the past few years. People use Twitter for so many different reasons: as a news feed, for research purposes, as a customer service platform and as a promotional channel. Just like any other content being published through one of your business’s communications channels, Twitter posts cannot be published in an ad hoc manner - unless you're Donald Trump!

Here is our list of strategies to building better engagement on Twitter:

  • Reward those who reach out to you – make an effort to promote people who engage with you. It can be a simple task such as promoting their website or blog posts in tweets. This can spark a conversation or even reciprocal linking from the person you’re promoting, thus increasing the reach of your posts.
  • Discover the best time to post – the nature of the twitter news feed means that users can only see the latest posts in their news feed and have to scroll for a long time to reach older posts that have been posted. Ensuring you post content at a time when your followers will see your posts is key to ensuring they are as visible as possible.
  • Follow the right people – follow people with the same interests as you. You can learn from them, gain inspiration and query for feedback if need be.
  • Don’t be self-absorbed – self-promotion is ok in small doses but don’t get caught up with promoting your business at every opportunity. Keep people interested with content they will enjoy rather than spamming them with a sales pitch.
  • Avoid tweeting fake news!
